COLUMBUS, Ohio--Two Wildcats won their first round match to lead Northwestern's wrestling team to a 10th-place standing on the first day of competition at the Big Ten Championships.

"It was a tough day for us," said head coach Tim Cysewski. "But I am confident our guys can bounce back tomorrow and place."

No. 7 seed Josh Ballard (Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad) began his day with a 4-3 decision over Minnesota's Jeremy Anderson at 149 lbs. The senior then lost his second match to No. 2 seed Ty Eustice of Iowa and now awaits action in the consolation bracket.

At 165 lbs., sixth-seeded Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) reeled off a 3-2 decision over Indiana's Mike Sabatello before falling to No. 3 seed Jacob Volkmann of Minnesota. Hayes will face Purdue's Bryce Markley tomorrow in the consolation round.

The Gophers currently lead the rest of the field with 64.5 points, followed by Iowa (64.0) and Michigan (50.5). NU's 8.0 points puts them ahead of last-place Michigan State, which has 3.0 points.

Sunday will show case Session 3 of the main bracket and Sessions 2 and 3 of the consolation bracket.
