COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Northwestern closed out its season Saturday with sophomore Michelle Oeser (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) and junior Christy Olin (Glen Elyn, Ill./Glenbard West) competing on the final day of the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas.
Olin finished 21st in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:13.31, just six-tenths of a second short of qualifying for the finals in the event. Olin previously swam in the 100 butterfly on Friday.
"Christy had a good swim (in the 200), but was just a hair off the pace," NU head coach Jimmy Tierney said. "Her race was better than in the Big Tens. She finished awfully close, so we hope this will be a positive for next year."
Oeser raced in the 100 freestyle, but was also unable to advance to the finals with a time of :58.09. She competed in the 50 freestyle at the Championships Thursday.
"For Michelle, it was her third big meet in a short period and that is tough," Tierney said. "She was a little dissappointed, but it is good that she was here at the Championships and can use that experience next year.
"We are so proud of both swimmers for getting to their first Championships. The initial trip is so tricky because the focus is so much on just getting there. We are hopeful this experience will lead to even more success next year," Tierney said.
