EVANSTON, Ill. -- Two Northwestern swimmers have qualified for the NCAA Championships March 18-20 in College Station, Texas, while another fell just short.
Sophomore Michelle Oeser (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) will compete in the 50 and 100 free while junior Christy Olin (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) will swim the 100 and 200 butterfly events. This is the first trip to the Championships for both Wildcats.
"Both swimmers have done everything they've been asked all year and are prepared as well as they can be," NU coach Jimmy Tierney said. "I think they both have more in them and can perform even better at the Championships. We are all very excited for them."
Freshman diver Leanne Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Buena) performed well in the NCAA Diving Zone C Qaulifying meet last weekend, March 12-14, in Bloomington, Ind., but did not qualify for the NCAA Championships. After recording a 10th-place finish in the one-meter event and an 11th-place showing on the three-meter board, Dumais turned in her best performance on the meet's final day in the platform event, finishing sixth. Eleven divers advanced to the Championships based on a grid scoring system.
"On the final day, Leanne relaxed and performed really well," Tierney said. "She only missed qualifying by two or three spots."
