PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Sophomore Lindsey Munday scored with less than a minute remaining to propel the Northwestern women's lacrosse team to a 14-13 win over Rutgers in New Jersey Saturday afternoon. The goal was Munday's third of the day; she joined teammates Sarah Albrecht and Aly Josephs in the three-goal category.

The win improved NU to 2-1 on the young season; Rutgers was playing its first game this season.

Munday's goal saved the Wildcats, who were leading 8-1 in the first half and 9-3 at halftime but saw the Scarlet Knights come roaring back with five goals in the final six minutes to tie the game at 13-13. However, that merely set the stage for Munday -- who hails from the Garden State -- to come up with the heroics.

"It was a good game," said head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. "We came out hard, but I was a little disappointed with how we played in the second half. However, a win is a win. We are excited to beat what I thought was a formidable opponent in Rutgers."

Lindsay Finocchiaro scored one minute into the game, setting the tone for the first half. Josephs and Albrecht followed to make the score 3-0 after 10 minutes, and after Rutgers' Maggie Bopp scored the Wildcats reeled off five goals in a span of five minutes to go up 8-1. The Scarlet Knights came back with two goals to cut its deficit to five, before NU closed out the first-half scoring with 6:01 to play.

Rutgers scored the first three goals of the second half, before Munday and Josephs scored four minutes apart to make the score 11-6. The teams traded goals, and the score was 13-8 in NU's favor with less than seven minutes to play.

At that point, Rutgers got untracked. Behind two goals apiece from Cristina Curiale and Katie Batiuk, the Scarlet Knights climbed back into the game; Batiuk knotted the game at 13 apiece off a feed from Lisa Savage.

However, Munday scored on an unassisted effort to allow the 'Cats to escape with the win.

In a game that ended up even on the scoreboard, Rutgers outshot NU 26-25. In the Wildcat goal, Ashley Gersuk came up with nine saves; at the other end, Jackie Greenbaum got the start but was replaced by Lyndsey Feldman after allowing eight goals without a save. Feldman finished with three stops.

Northwestern is in action again next weekend, taking on American Lacrosse Conference preseason favorite Ohio State in Columbus. That game will face off at 1 p.m. EST (noon Central).
