CLEVELAND, Ohio--Sophomore Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) took ninth place in the junior women's epee contest to lead all Northwestern fencers at the USFA Junior Olympic Championships.
Sullivan, who edged teammate Jessica Florendo's (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) 10th-place performance in the foil division, also had the best showing last year with the same finish.
"I am happy with Sharon's performance," said head coach Laurie Schiller. "I thought she was fencing well enough to reach the final, but it just did not happen unfortunately."
Fellow squad members Sara Pecherek (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and Courtney DuBois (Chatham, N.J./Oak Knoll) also did well, taking 19th and 24th, respectively. All three will earn points toward their rankings for placing in the top 32 out of 136 competitors.
"Overall, to have seven of our nine fencers earn points is very good," said Schiller. "I think this was our best outing at the Junior Olympics."
The sixth-ranked Wildcats (29-4) take a break from competition before participating in the Midwest Fencing Championships March 6-7 at the University of Notre Dame.
