CLEVELAND, Ohio--On the third day of competition at the Junior Olympic Championships--NU's second day--Northwestern's fifth-ranked women's fencing team was able to get two of its own in the top 15 of the junior women's foil event.
Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) tied for 10th and Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) followed with a 15th-place finish in the field of 170. Both improved from last year, when the former ended up 22nd, while the latter placed 27th.
"Those (top-15 finishes) were excellent," said head coach Laurie Schiller. "We are all happy with the results."
The other Wildcat in the event was Lauren Olson (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Bishop Montgomery), who took 129th in her first appearance at the tournament.
The Championships conclude on Monday, when the junior women's epee competition is held.
