CLEVELAND, Ohio--Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) placed 25th to lead two other Northwestern sabreists on the second day of competition at the USFA Junior Olympic Championships.

Fellow Wildcats Sophie Eustis (Andover, Mass./Concord Academy) and Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), meanwhile, tied for 28th and 56th, respectively, in a field of 108.

"It was tough competition--all the top fencers were here," said head coach Laurie Schiller. "I am pleased with how the squad did and how much the girls improved."

Last year Eustis, as a high school student, won just one bout to finish 56th. Vu also improved significantly, as she took 60th at the 2003 event.

The NU foil squad will compete on Sunday, and the epee squad will have its competition on Monday.
