NOTRE DAME, Ind.--Northwestern's fifth-ranked women's fencing team got half of its revenge at the Notre Dame Duals.

On the final day of competition, the Wildcats fell to No. 1 Notre Dame 18-9 but beat No. 2 Ohio State 17-10--the only two opponents to beat NU (26-3) this season--in concluding the two-day, 11-team event with an 8-1 record.

"It would have been nice to beat Notre Dame and get that ninth win, but (the Fighting Irish) are a very good team," said head coach Laurie Schiller. "It was a hard fought match.

"I was worried that the loss might affect our performance against Ohio State (which immediately proceeded the Notre Dame match), but the team pulled through. That was an excellent win."

Northwestern began the day with a 26-1 rout of Detroit and ended it with a 21-6 victory against Cleveland State. In between, Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istavan Gimnazium) went 3-0 against the Buckeyes to help the foil squad win 7-2. Also, Sara Pecherek (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) notched an epee squad-best 2-1 showing in its 5-4 loss to the Irish.

The Wildcats will compete in the Penn Duals Feb. 7 in Philadelphia.
