CHICAGO, Ill. -- Four different Wildcats found the back of the net -- some in spectacular style -- to push Northwestern to a 4-1 win at Illinois-Chicago Wednesday afternoon.
Fresh off an overtime loss to Ohio State that snapped a five-match unbeaten streak for Northwestern, the Wildcats wasted no time uncorking their attack against the Flames.
In the seventh minute, John Carlstedt (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebuef Jesuit) gave NU a 1-0 lead off a fast break on assists from Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) and David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade).
The assist was Roth's 10th of the season, giving him the Northwestern single-season record all by himself. The freshman was recently named by Top Drawer Soccer as an honorable mention freshman All-America selection.
The Wildcats (11-4-2) struck again in the 32nd minute when Alvarez swerved a ball into the net on a set piece from the top of the box. The sophomore's three points in the match give him 29 on the season, the third-best single-season total in NU history.
Five minutes later, junior Brad Napper (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead on possibly Northwestern's most spectacular goal of the season. After the ball was headed into the air, Napper smashed a picture-perfect bicycle kick past the UIC goalkeeper to essentially put the match out of reach.
The Flames (5-11-2) would find the back of the net in the 60th minute to cut the Wildcats' lead to 3-1, but junior Kevin Earnest (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) fired a shot from the right side and in to push Northwestern to its 4-1 winning margin.
The Wildcats return to action in their regular-season finale at 1 p.m. Sunday at Wisconsin.
