Wildcats Knocked Out of Big Ten Singles Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern continued competition at the Big Ten Singles Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin Sunday. Senior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was the only Wildcat to notch a victory on the day, beating Tucker of Illinois 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Hanus -- the No. 8 seed in the championships -- later fell in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-2 to Atas of Ohio State. He finished the weekend with a 3-1 mark.

Atas also defeated senior Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16. Perrin went 2-1 on the weekend. Junior Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) fell to Rose of Purdue in his third-round match 6-1, 6-4. Shaechterle also posted a 2-1 mark.

In the first-round consolation bracket, sophomore Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) was defeated by Monrich of Michigan State 6-4, 1-6, 7-6. Christian posted a 0-2 record on the weekend. Sophomore Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) fell to Bellido of Wisconsin by default. Friedland had worked his way into the main draw by going 2-0 in the qualifying rounds. He dropped his next two matches though, finishing with a 2-2 record.

In the second-round consolation bracket, sophomore Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) fell to Berger of Penn State 6-3, 6-2. Lock finished up with a 1-2 record on the weekend.
