EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior defender Brad Napper (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) has been named first-team All-Big Ten while sophomore Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) earned his second consecutive second-team nod by a vote of the league's coaches.
This is the fifth season in program history and the first time since 1999 that the Wildcats have earned two or more spots on the All-Big Ten first or second teams. NU also landed multiple honors in 1991, 1993, 1998 and 1999 (when the 'Cats snatched three All-Big Ten nods).
Napper is the second Wildcat in program history to earn first-team recognition -- Matt Keeler was the first on that squad in 1999. Napper, a central defender and captain, is second on the team in goals (7), points (15) and game-winning goals (2).
Alvarez is the conference's second-leading scorer with 11 goals and 29 points -- 11 points more than first-team selection Jacob Peterson of Indiana. Alvarez is the fifth player in NU history to earn All-Big Ten honors twice.
Freshman David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team -- marking the Wildcats' second consecutive season with a player on that squad. Alvarez was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year last season.
Despite not being named Freshman of the Year this season, Roth is easily having the most impressive campaign for a newcomer in the conference. His 11 assists currently lead the Big Ten by two and have already shattered the NU single-season record.
