KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Led by senior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), Northwestern is among the leaders at the 17-team Mercedes-Benz Women's Championships, which is being hosted by the University of Tennessee. The Wildcats are in sixth place, 10 strokes off the lead, while Kim is in fifth place, two strokes behind co-leaders Holly Cantwell (Tennessee) and Gabby Wedding (Kent State).
Kim, who led all players in par-4 scoring (3.86 average) for the first 18 holes, shot a 39 on her first nine holes. She then moved to the top of pack with a 32, which included three birdies and six pars, on her last nine holes. Kim finished with an even-par 71.
Sophomore Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood), no relation to Ina, also shot a 39 on the first nine before coming back with a 35 on the final nine. She is in 18th place with a 3-over 74.
Freshmen Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) are both in 44th place with 6-over 77's. Sophomore Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) rounds out the NU contingent, sitting 70th with a 10-over 81.
Second-round play starts Saturday morning.
Arkansas leads the tournament, followed by Ohio State, Kent State, Tulsa and Tulane.
