EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, this weekend to finish off its regular season with a rematch at 3 p.m. Friday against the No. 14 Hawkeyes before ending the year at 1 p.m. Saturday against Southwest Missouri State.
The match with Iowa is the schools' second tilt this year; Northwestern defeated the Hawkeyes, 1-0, in double overtime Sept. 24 in Evanston. Sophomore Sherri-Anne Nyberg (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary) earned the 93-minute shutout and senior Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) put home the match-winner for NU.
After that loss, Iowa reeled off six consecutive wins before dropping its last match to No. 5 Michigan State, entering this weekend with a 9-6 record, 4-1 in the Big Ten.
Northwestern (7-10, 1-4 Big Ten) has played seven of this week's NFHCA/STX top-20 teams, with its only win in those matches coming against the Hawkeyes.
Southwest Missouri State enters the weekend with a 9-6 record, 4-3 in the Northern Pacific conference. SMS went to overtime in its first four and six of its first nine matches, earning a 4-2 record in those contests. Northwestern is a perfect 3-0 in overtime matches so far this season.
Gabby Gomez leads SMS with eight goals, six assists and 22 points. Jessie Lininger has logged the majority of minutes in the cage, registering a 1.60 goals against average with three shutouts.
Following the conclusion of the regular season, Northwestern will host the Big Ten Tournament Nov. 5-7.
