EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 3 Duke proved why it is the nation's best offensive team, scoring five times to defeat Northwestern, 5-1, in NU's final home match of the season.
With the Blue Devils up 3-0 in the second half, senior defender Morgan Kuhn (Chesterfield, Mo./Lafayette) corralled the ball during a penalty corner and put it in the cage in the 56th minute for her first goal of the season and the second of her career.
Kuhn, who has played defense her entire career with NU, has three assists and one goal this year as a member of the penalty corner battery. Her only other career goal came in her sophomore season.
With its lead cut to 3-1, Duke (14-3) fought back, scoring two late goals--including one on a penalty stroke--to make the final score 5-1.
Junior Kelly Augustine (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) made 11 saves in the cage against a 26-shot barrage from the Blue Devils. Kuhn made two defensive saves for the 'Cats.
NU (7-10) celebrated Senior Day before the match, honoring Kuhn and classmate Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier).
Northwestern returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday in a Big Ten match at Iowa. The Wildcats defeated the Hawkeyes, 1-0, in overtime earlier this season in a match that did not count toward the conference standings.
