EVANSTON, Ill.--Leaving the cold and snow behind, the Northwestern sabre squad will travel to San Jose, Calif. this weekend to compete in the USFA North American Cup.

The three-day event (NU will compete on Saturday and Sunday) will showcase the continent's best in sabre fencing, in two classes-senior (C rank or higher) and junior (under 20 years of age). Sophie Eustis (Andover, Mass./Concord Academy), Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo), Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) and Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) are all scheduled to compete.

"This event is an excellent experience for the fencers," said head coach Laurie Schiller. "All the top sabreists will be there. I expect our squad to do well, especially in the junior event."

All five Wildcats will compete in the senior event, while Eustis, Pasternak and Vu also will take part in the junior event, since they are all under 20 years of age.

Last year, Pasternak led all NU sabreists in the senior competition with her 32nd-place finish. Meanwhile, then-high school student Vu finished 38th, and Dunn tied for 48th to round out the top 50.

In the junior competition, Van Gieson took 30th, and Pasternak ended up 48th.

Next week, Northwestern's foil and epee squad will get to go San Jose for the second part of the American Cup. They will compete Jan. 16-18.
