EVANSTON, Ill. - After a 2-1-0 start, Northwestern breaks into the first STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll of the season.
The Big Ten was well-represented in the initial poll, as six of the seven conference institutions were ranked among the top 20 in the country and one other was found among the top five teams receiving votes.
The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) votes on the top 20 teams each week as the poll is released every Tuesday.
Penn State led the way for the League, earning the No. 4 spot after collecting 484 points and one first-place vote.
Three other schools were named to the top 10 in No. 7 Michigan, No. 8 Michigan State and No. 9 Iowa. Indiana, off to its first 4-0 start in program history, checked in at No. 13, while NU was ranked 19th. Ohio State was listed fifth among programs also receiving votes to place all seven conference programs among the top 25.
Candice Cooper and Ellen Schlafly lead the Wildcats in goals with two apiece.
