IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Northwestern women's soccer team continued its hot play of recent, allowing the first goal Sunday afternoon at Iowa but coming back with three of its own to take a 3-1 decision from the Hawkeyes.

After an 0-2 start to the 2003 season, the Wildcats have gone 6-1. In addition, the 'Cats improved to 2-1 in Big Ten play as they began a stretch in which they'll play eight straight Big Ten matches -- six of them on the road.

After a scoreless first half, the Hawkeyes did not take long to get on the board in the second stanza. In the 46th minute, Courtney Wilkerson fired an unassisted goal from 35 yards out into the upper left corner of the net.

The Wildcats answered 10 minutes later, when junior Ashleigh Garmon beat Iowa goalkeeper Britta Vogele in the bottom left corner of the net. Sophomore Julie Lipinski assisted Garmon on the goal.

Lipinski was also involved in Northwestern's game-winning goal at the 65:49 mark, as she sent a cross into the box the sophomore Tabitha Lowey headed into the net over Vogele.

The Wildcats added insurance less than five minutes later on an unassisted goal by senior Kristen Pearce. Pearce scored on a breakaway after Vogele left the net while going for the ball. Pearce avoided Vogele and sent the ball into the far side of the net for the 3-1 lead.

"I was very pleased with our result today," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh. "We were taking it to them pretty strong early on, but as the half wore on Iowa began to hold play. We addressed it at the half, and then after they scored we really picked it up. We played hard and sharp, and all three of our goals were good goals so we were rewarded for our play."

Whitney Jones collected two saves in the NU goal, while Vogele had four stops.

Northwestern is back in action two times next weekend on the road, taking on Minnesota Friday night and then Wisconsin Sunday in a pair of Big Ten matches.
