MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Northwestern dropped its second Big Ten match of the season with 2-1 loss to Minnesota Friday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. NU led early; however, Minnesota rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to record its second Big Ten win of the year.

Northwestern (6-4-0, 2-2-0) got on the board first following a Minnesota foul. Aileen Guiney's free kick from outside the 18-yard box sailed over Gopher goalkeeper Karli Kopietz in the 12th minute.

The Golden Gophers responded with a flurry to finish out the first half. Just more than three minutes after falling behind, freshman Haley Lentsch punched the ball up to Becky Dellaria, who beat Wildcat goalkeeper Whitney Jones in a chase and kicked it past her into the back of the net.

Minnesota took the lead for good 24 minutes later as senior Amanda McMahon passed up to Lentsch. Her shot from the top of the box sailed high and deflected off the hand of the outstretched goalkeeper and into the goal in the 39th minute.

Northwestern had a golden opportunity in the second half on a rebound in front of the Minnesota net. The Wildcats' leading scorer Kristen Pearce was all alone to put home a rebound, but Minnesota defender Jen Cressman made the save with 20 minutes to play.

NU kept the ball in the Minnesota zone for most of the last 20 minutes, but were unable to capitalize.

"That was the worst effort I have seen from our team in my three years here at Northwestern," said head coach Jenny Haigh following the match. "We need to learn a lesson from this and we need to learn it quickly, because we cannot afford to ever play like this again."

Kopietz led Minnesota to the win with four saves, while Jones stopped five for the 'Cats.
