EVANSTON, Ill. - Once conference play begins, midweek non-conference matchups can be hard to get up for. However, the Northwestern women's soccer team did not seem to run into that problem Thursday afternoon, outshooting Loyola-Chicago 19-5 and emerging from the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex with a 1-0 victory.
NU's goal came in the 51st minute, when senior Kristen Pearce re-directed a cross from sophomore Tabitha Lowey. It was Pearce's second goal this season.
"We want to get in the habit of playing well and getting the result, and a match like this goes a long way toward accomplishing that goal," said head coach Jenny Haigh.
If there was a concern coming out of the match, it was the lack of finishing by the Wildcats (5-3-0). Of the 19 shots NU took, only seven were on goal. The other best chance occured late in the second half, when sophomore Nell Compernolle shot through the Loyola defense. However, her effort was blocked by Rambler goalkeeper Emily Peick, and then two subsequent NU chances were kicked aside by defenders.
"This game was frustrating at times," admitted Haigh. "Loyola showed great discipline and organization and did a great job of getting behind the ball and defending us."
At the other end, freshman Whitney Jones was called upon to make a pair of routine saves as she picked up her fourth shutout of the season and her second in a row.
Northwestern now enters a stretch where the Wildcats will play eight straight Big Ten matches, beginning Sunday afternoon at Iowa.
