EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman Gerardo Alvarez has been named Big Ten Player of the Week after exploding for both NU goals in a 2-0 win over UW-Green Bay on Tues., Sept. 17.

Alvarez tallied the first goal in the 30th minute to put the 'Cats up 1-0 when he blasted a shot past UW-Green Bay goalkeeper David Palmer.

He added an insurance goal at 87:30 to put the match out of reach. Alvarez has been the Wildcats' most dangerous offensive threat thus far.

He has tallied 12 points on five goals and two assists. His first collegiate goal came in NU's 5-2 loss to College of Charleston on Sept. 5. Alvarez ranks second in the Big Ten in points per game with 1.71 scored and his five goals places him third in the conference.

He is the only freshman to be named Big Ten POW this year and leads all other Big Ten freshmen in virtually every offensive category.
