VERONA, Wis. -- Led by junior Mary Ellen Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett), Northwestern's women's golf team placed fourth among nine teams at the Badger Invitational. Michigan State captured the team title, finishing 21 strokes ahead of the Wildcats.
The tournament was reduced from 54 to 36 holes as rain suspended play on both Friday and Saturday.
Grzebien shot a 7-over 151 (76-75) for her two rounds and finished seven strokes behind Allison Fouch (Michigan State) and Malinda Johnson (Wisconsin). Fouch won the tiebreaker by one stroke over Johnson.
Two of Northwestern's newcomers, Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) and Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), placed 11th and 21st, respectively, and finished second and third for the 'Cats. Robb fired a 13-over 157 (77-80), while Scholten had an 18-over 162 (86-76).
Junior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) tied for 24th place with a 19-over 163 (81-82). Freshman Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) -- no relation to Ina -- was 26th at 20-over (82-82).
