EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's soccer team earned its second tie in as many days Sunday, this time matching up with Evansville 2-2. The match was the close of the 2003 North Shore Classic hosted by the Wildcats.
With the draw, Evansville was able to fashion a 1-0-1 record that gave it four points and the title. Northwestern went 0-0-2 in the event; sophomore Kevin Earnest and freshman Daniel Chille were the Wildcats' all-tournament team members (compete all-tournament team is below).
An energetic first half finished with Northwestern holding a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats were given a penalty kick in the 17th minute, and sophomore Eric Brin was able to slot it past Purple Aces' goalkeeper Troy Perkins for a 1-0 lead.
Evansville drew level 10 minutes later when a shot from 20 yards out by Dan Broxum hit teammate Ian McAuley. The deflection caught NU goalkeeper Brian Heckenbach off guard, and he was helpless as the ball spun and rolled into the left corner of the goal.
Northwestern rebounded from that misfortune, however, and in the 32nd minute Chille took a free kick from Alexander Renzi, beat an Evansville defender along the left side, then slotted a 15-yard shot past an oncoming Perkins.
That lead looked like it might hold up, as Northwestern continued to create opportunities while also containing the dangerous McAuley and Broxum. However, with just more than four minutes remaining in regulation, a tripping penalty in the box gave the Aces a penalty kick. On the shot, Heckenbach guessed right but Broxum went left, and that knotted the score at 2-2.
Neither team was able to create a standout chance in the overtime sessions, and the match ended in a draw.
In the first match of Sunday's action, DePaul got a goal from Luke Rojo 13 minutes into the second half, and the Blue Demons made it stand up for a 1-0 win over Vanderbilt. In an extremely even match, Rojo took a cross from Patrick Vyncke and knocked a shot just under the crossbar for the difference.
Northwestern will be back in action next weekend at the College of Charleston, taking part in the Aaron Olinsky Memorial Classic. The Wildcats will play Charleston Friday night, then take on South Carolina Sunday afternoon.
