EVANSTON, Ill. - After weeks of camp, the NU field hockey team heads to the University of New Hampshire to kick off the 2003 season. The Wildcats will face Boston College Saturday at noon at the neutral site and takes on host UNH Monday at 1 p.m.
Ninth-year head coach Marisa Didio, who is stepping down at the end of the season, is excited to get the season under way and is impressed by the improvements her squad has made since the start of camp on August 13.
"We've really become a much stronger team each day," said Didio. "We are putting ourselves in a position to contol some matches on offense."
With only three seniors on the roster, the 'Cats are certainly young. However, Didio feels as though this team might be as mature as any she has had.
"We are a confident team right now," she said. "We've really had a lot of strong leadership throughout the preseason and it has showed in the improvements we've made."
A 2-1 win over Kent State in an exhibition match on August 23 certainly helps the Wildcats' confidence, as well. NU will battle the Golden Flashes in a regular-season match on September 21 in Evanston, as well.
Freshman Sherri-Anne Nyberg will start in net for the 'Cats after an impressive camp. Fellow classmates Megan Sieberg and Meghan Small should see significant action also.
