EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern women's tennis player Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Putney) is off to a fast start in qualifying play at the 2003 Wimbledon Championships. The freshman dispatched of Anna Hawkins (GBR) 6-3, 6-0 today in first-round action.

Grier is set to face Germany's Julia Schruff, the 14th seed in the qualifying draw, Tuesday. Schruff outlasted Natalia Gussoni (ARG) in the first round, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.

Players entering the singles draw at the qualifying event have to play three rounds on grass the week before The Championships begin, with the prize being entry into the main Wimbledon draw the following week.

Unlike The Championships, there is no single winner in qualifying play. Instead, the players who win all three rounds-16 in the men's singles and 12 in the ladies' singles-will progress, along with four pairs in each of the ladies' and men's doubles events.
