EVANSTON, Ill. - The American Lacrosse Conference coaches selected their all-conference teams Tuesday afternoon, and a quartet of Northwestern women were honored.
Junior Courtney Koester (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) was a first-team honoree. She led the Wildcats this season in draw controls (45, which was 21 more than anyone else on the team) and ground balls (38), and tied for the team lead with 13 caused turnovers. She was also an offensive threat, finishing second on the team with 18 goals and fourth with 21 points. She had four multiple-goal games this year, highlighted by a four-goal outburst in NU's ALC opener against Ohio, a 13-9 win.
Courtney's sister, Ashley Koester (Richmond, Ind./Richmond), was one of three NU women to earn second-team All-ALC. Ashley tied Courtney with a team-high 13 caused turnovers, was second on the team (behind Courtney) with 37 ground balls, and also came up with 16 draw controls which was third on the squad. Primarily a defensive player, Ashley got forward this season to record the first two goals of her career -- against Sacred Heart and Connecticut -- also had two assists.
The Koester sisters are an amazing lacrosse story. Neither of them had never even picked up a lacrosse stick until the fall of 2001, when head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller saw them playing ultimate frisbee and realized their sheer athleticism would help with their learning curve. She persuaded them to bring sticks home over Thanksgiving break and see what they thought, and when they arrived back on campus following that break she gave them a tryout. They have been regular starters since the first game of the 2002 season, and that carried over to this year.
Two freshmen, Lindsey Munday (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and Laura Glassanos (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy), were also second-team All-ALC picks.
Munday led the Wildcats in scoring this season with a team-high 20 goals and eight assists for 28 points. She also had 24 draw controls and 22 ground balls. Munday enjoyed a strong second half of the season, as she scored in each of the last 11 games including a four-goal game vs. Davidson and three-goal games vs. nationally ranked teams in Connecticut and Penn State.
Glassanos, meanwhile, was second on the team with 26 points and led the 'Cats with nine assists. A versatile player, she also had 21 ground balls, 12 caused turnovers and 13 draw controls. Glassanos had a six-point game vs. Davidson (4g, 2a) and five other multiple-goal contests on the season.
In its second year back as a varsity program, the Northwestern women's lacrosse team finished with an 8-8 overall record and went 2-4 in ALC play.
The ALC's postseason honors were swept by co-champion Ohio State this season -- Regina Oliver was named the Player of the Year, Erin Forquer was the Goalie of the Year, and KC Carter was the Rookie of the Year. In addition, Sue Stimmel of Ohio State was the Coach of the Year.
