BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team broke a 2-2 tie with four straight goals before halftime, and Northwestern was unable to recover as the Hokies surprised the 20th-ranked Wildcats with a 14-9 victory.
The loss was the second in a row for the 'Cats, who fell to 6-5 overall. VT improved to 3-10.
The teams traded the first four goals of the game in the opening 20 minutes, before the Hokies too control with four goals in the final 9:32 to take a 6-2 advantage into the halftime break.
NU got things started right away in the second half when freshman Lindsey Munday scored just 50 seconds in, but every time the Wildcats tried to mount a comeback Virginia Tech was able to quickly answer with a stop.
Munday, Lynda McCandlish and Angela McMahon led a balanced scoring attack for Northwestern, as each recorded two goals and an assist. Donna McCann added a goal and an assist, while Erin Flynn and Laura Glassanos each netted a goal.
Defensively, head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller noted the play of Sarah Walsh, who had six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Northwestern is home for two American Lacrosse Conference games next weekend. The Wildcats will host Penn State Saturday at noon, then Davidson Monday at 4 p.m.
