MADISON - Northwestern added one more win to its Big Ten record with a 4-3 defeat of Wisconsin Saturday afternoon in Madison. The Wildcats have won 22 straight conference matches. The win also gave head coach Claire Pollard her 100th win at Northwestern. Pollard is 100-27 in her four plus seasons.
The Wildcats improve to 9-6 (2-0 Big Ten) on the season as Wisconsin drops to 4-7 (1-1 Big Ten).
The doubles point once again eluded the Wildcats, but NU was able to win four of the six singles matches for the win. The ninth-ranked duo of Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush defeated Linde Mues and Lara Vojnov at No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker 9-8(2), but that wasn't enough to secure the early lead.
Down one going into singles, the 'Cats bounced back and took matches at No. 1and 2 in straight sets. Grier defeated Mues 6-3, 6-3, while Rush downed Shana McElroy 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. Jamie Peisel needed three sets to take care of Katie McGaffigan at No. 3 (6-1, 2-6, 6-4). Ruth Barnes got off to an early start, downing Vojnov 7-5 in the first set, however Vojnov stormed back in the second (6-3) to tie the match. Barnes prevailed, winning the third set 6-1.
Wisconsin's only singles wins came at No. 4 and 6. Lindsay Martin defeated Andrea Yung in straight sets at No. 4. Teresa Gonzaga was the 6-4, 7-6(4) winner over Stacy Kokx at No. 6.
The 'Cats are back in action on Thursday, March 27 at Texas. The match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
