AUSTIN - After a two-week break, the No. 26 Wildcat tennis team took the courts on Thursday, March 27 in Austin, Texas. The 'Cats (10-6, 2-0 Big Ten) outlasted No. 31 Texas (7-7, 7-1 Big 12) 4-3 at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

Tied at three all, the match came down to the No. 1 spot. Texas' Strohm won the first set 6-3, but NU's Cristelle Grier rallied to win the second set (6-3), forcing the deciding third. Grier pulled out the final set (6-4), sealing the win for the 'Cats.

Northwestern got off to an early start, taking the 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. The 13th-ranked duo of Grier and Jessica Rush defeated Kendra Strohm and Ziva Grasic at No. 1 8-4. Kristi Roemer and Jamie Peisel were the 8-5 victors over Michelle Krinke and Macey Breece.

Northwestern took a 3-0 lead after winning at No. 2 and 5 singles in straight sets. Rush defeated Kelly Baritot 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2, while Ruth Barnes downed Lindsay Blau 6-0, 7-5 at No. 5.

The Longhorns rallied with a win at No. 3 for their first point of the match. Texas' Grasic defeated Andrea Yung 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 and Breece was the 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 winner over NU's Kristi Roemer at No. 6.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, March 29 when they hosts rival Illinois at 11 a.m. at the Combe Tennis Center.
