Pasternak Places Third at Midwest Regionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Freshman sabreist Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) finished third at the Midwest Regionals on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, giving her a strong chance at qualifying for the 2003 NCAA Championships. The official selections will be announced by the NCAA late next week.
Classmate Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and sophomore Julia Foldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istavan Gimnazium) placed sixth in their respective weapons (epee and foil). Foldi is vying for her second straight appearance in the NCAA Championships.
First-year foilist Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) garnered the fourth-best finish on the team, finishing seventh. Melissa Dattalo (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) placed ninth.
Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) and Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) round out the sabre squad. Van Gieson earned eighth place and Dunn took ninth.
Kelsey Nencheck (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) placed ninth and Kate Rigot (Martinez, Ga./Lakeside) finished 11th, closing out the epee squad.
A team can qualify a maximum of 12 competitors to the championships. This year's competition will be held in Colorado Springs, Colo. March 20-23.
