EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team stretched its Big Ten win streak to 24 with a 5-2 win over the No. 55 Purdue Boilermakers (6-8, 1-3 Big Ten) Sunday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center. With the win, Northwestern improves to 12-6 on the season and 4-0 in the Big Ten.

Northwestern used strong play in singles en route to the 5-2 victory. The 'Cats dropped the doubles point, falling at No. 2 and 3. Purdue's Melissa Woods and Shawna Zuccarini defeated Ruth Barnes and Andrea Yung at No. 2, 9-8 (7-5). Gretchan Haynor and Melissa Iqbal were the 8-6 winners at No. 3 over Kristi Roemer and Jamie Peisel.

Down 1-0 going into singles, the Wildcats clawed their way back as Grier defeated Haynor at No. 1 in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) to even the score. Purdue took its last lead of the match with a win at No. 6. Missy Wright was the straight set winner over Roemer (6-3, 6-3). Yung tied the match at two apiece with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Zuccarini at No. 4. Peisel's 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 3 gave NU the 3-2 advantage. Jessica Rush clinched the match for the 'Cats, defeating Amy Walgenbach 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. Barnes closed out the match, winning 7-5, 6-0 at No. 5.

The 'Cats are back in action on Friday, April 4 at Iowa. Match time is slated for 2 p.m.

NOTES: With her win today at No. 1 singles, freshman Cristelle Grier has now won 16 straight dual matches, tying the school record.
