Wildcats Sweep Iowa, 7-0

IOWA CITY, IOWA - Northwestern's women's tennis team extended its conference win streak to 29 with a 7-0 sweep of Iowa Friday afternoon at the Iowa Recreation Building. With the win the 'Cats improve to 13-6 on the season and 5-0 in the Big Ten. Iowa falls to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
The 'Cats dominated the match, winning each of the six singles matches in straight sets. NU opened the competition with a sweep of doubles. Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush defeated Steffi Hoch and Gloria Okino 8-1 at No. 1. Ruth Barnes and Andrea Yung battled Iowa's No. 2 duo of Cassie Haas and Denitza Alexandrova. Barnes and Yung won a tiebreaker to escape the loss, 8-7(5). Playing together for the first time, Jamie Peisel and Connie Chiang defeated Jennifer Hodgman and Chelsea Glynn 8-4 at No. 3.
With a 1-0 lead, the 'Cats stormed through singles without giving up a set. No. 7 Grier defeated Haas, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1. No. 80 Rush handed Hoch a 6-1, 6-1 loss at No. 2. Peisel was the 6-4, 6-0 winner over Okino at No. 3. Yung won the first set over Glynn with ease (6-2), however the second set was a bit more challenging. Glynn forced a second-set tiebreak, but came up short as Yung won 7-6(5). Alexandrova came out strong at No. 5, but lost the tiebreak in the first set, falling 7-6(6). Barnes rallied, defeating Alexandrova 6-2 in the second for the win. Kristi Roemer rounded out the 'Cats lineup with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Hodgman.
Northwestern is back in action on Sunday, April 6 at Minnesota. The match is slated for 11 a.m.
