Van Gieson Takes Second in Sabre at Midwest Collegiate Championships

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Sophomore Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) placed second to lead Northwestern at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Individual Championships on Sunday in South Bend, Ind. Van Gieson's top finish came on the heels of the sabre squad's second-place finish Saturday in the team competition.
Van Gieson reached the final after disposing of Ohio State's Marguerite Plekhanov, 15-14 in the semifinals. The Buckeyes Louis Bond-Williams prevailed in the final, 15-5. Fellow sabreist Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) finished fifth.
Classmate Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Isatavan Gimnazium) took third in the foil draw, and freshman Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) placed fifth.
Freshman Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), who placed seventh, was NU's top finisher in ep?e.
Northwestern is next in action March 8 at the Midwest Regionals in Columbus, Ohio.
