EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern bounced back from its first loss of the season with a shutout (7-0) of Big Ten foe Wisconsin on Saturday at Combe Tennis Center. It was the Wildcats? 14th consecutive win against the Badgers, dating to April 7, 1991.
Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westake) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) improved to 8-2 in doubles as NU won its third straight doubles point. Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Russell Bennett (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) secured the point with a 9-8 (5) win against the Badgers? Alex Conti and Blake Baratz.
Hanus went on to clinch the match with his 7-5, 6-3 decision against David Hippee. Hanus has a team-high 13 singles wins. Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman), Perrin, Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and Ahmed Wahla (Lahore, Pakistan/Lahore American School) also picked up straight-set wins.
Jenkins dropped the only set in singles play, falling behind one set to Alex Kasarov. But Jenkins won the last two frames, both by 6-2 margins, for the win.
Northwestern (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) returns to action Sunday against Indiana State. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at Combe Tennis Center.
