EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern got it done in the regular season. Now let's see if that success translates into postseason prosperity again. Winners of three of the last four Midwest Collegiate Conference titles, the women's fencing team takes aim at the conference title this weekend in South Bend, Ind at the Midwest Collegiate Fencing Championships.
Despite having three All-Americans and winning the ep?e title, NU fell short of winning its fourth consecutive Midwest title last season. After posting a 16-1 conference mark in 2003, the 'Cats are right back in the thick of things for this year's edition.
NU's sabreists led the team (27-6) with a 30-3 record, including wins against No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 4 Ohio State. Sophomore Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) led the way with a 36-2 conference record. She was also one of three NU sabreists to record 59 wins in the regular season, with the others being freshman Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley).
The epeeists are led by freshman Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), who posted a 64-14 regular season mark. Her 64 wins were tied for the most among freshmen and the second most on the team. Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istavan Gimnazium) and Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) check in as the team's top foilists. F?ldi went a team-best 69-9 and Wang also went 64-14.
Action gets underway Saturday and Sunday around 8 a.m. The weapons squad championships are Saturday and the individual championships are Sunday.
