WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Carmen Cosgrove (Perth, Western Australia) and Erica Rose (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) each posted top-five finishes Friday as the Northwestern women's swimming and diving team completed the third day of competition at the Big Ten Championships hosted by Purdue University. Cosgrove posted a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly, while Rose placed fifth in the 400 individual medley.
The Wildcats slipped one spot in the team standings, falling to eighth place. NU has compiled 176 team points, just five points behind Iowa for seventh. Indiana's 400 points continues to lead the pack. However, Wisconsin trails by only 17 points with 383 heading into the final day of competition Saturday.
Cosgrove entered the Championships ranked second in the 100 fly. After placing sixth in the preliminary round, she posted a season-best time of 54.63 to finish third. Her mark fell just nine-hundredths of a second of short of earning an NCAA "A" cut. Cosgrove will have another opportunity to earn a Big Ten title Saturday when she competes in the 200 fly.
Rose recorded her best time of the season in placing fifth in the 400 IM. She shaved over three seconds off her previous top time, touching the wall in 4:21.30 to earn a "B" cut.
After placing 13th on the 1-meter diving board Thursday, Ashley Carter (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) moved up three spots to 10th on the 3-meter board Friday. Her score of 435.70 through the semifinal round barely missed out on being one of the top eight divers that advanced to the finals.
Northwestern had two swimmers score in the 200 freestyle. Vicky West (Redlands, Calif./Redlands) and Erin Swenson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) finished in 11th and 12th place, respectively. West finished in a "B" cut time of 1:50.04, while Swenson also provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in 1:50.36.
Brielle Bovee (Winter Park, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) was also an individual place-winner for the Wildcats Friday. The sophomore took 14th in the 100 breaststroke, touching in at 1:04.80.
NU's 400 medley relay squad of Cosgrove, Katie Paglini (Chicago, Ill./Latin School), Paige Nath (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) and Sara Petric (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) contributed a seventh-place finish. The team's time of 3:47.59 was a season best.
The 2003 Big Ten Championships conclude Saturday with the preliminary rounds beginning at 11 a.m. Eastern time and the finals slated for 7 p.m.
