Wildcats in Seventh After Day One of Big Ten Meet

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Seventh-place finishes in each of the two relay events Wednesday night has left the Northwestern women's swimming and diving team in seventh place overall after the opening night of competition at the Big Ten Championships. The Wildcats posted NCAA "B" cut times in both events of the evening, the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays.
The 200 medley relay team of Katie Paglini (Chicago, Ill./Latin School), Paige Nath (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy), Carmen Cosgrove (Perth, Western Australia) and Sara Petric (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) posted a season-best time of 1:43.41. Penn State won the event in an "A" cut time of 1:39.41, four seconds ahead of the 'Cats.
Meanwhile, the 800 freestyle relay squad also recorded its best time of the season. Erin Swenson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central), Cosgrove, Rachel Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and Vicky West (Redlands, Calif./Redlands) took seventh in a time of 7:22.37, taking over 12 seconds off the relay's previous best.
Wisconsin finished first in the event in an "A" cut time of 7:07.30. The Badgers defeated runner-up Indiana by over six seconds.
Action continues Thursday through Saturday at Purdue University. Preliminary rounds begin at 11 a.m. Eastern time, with finals slated for 7 p.m.
