COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Freshman Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) capped off a strong weekend for Northwestern at the United States Fencing Association Junior Olympics, placing 10th in Monday's ep?e competition.
Success is nothing new to Sullivan, who has a 55-14 record, the second best mark on the team, or any of this year's freshmen.
Classmate Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) placed 27th out of 149 foilists Friday, which was NU's best finish before Monday. Wang, who entered the event as NU's only foil competitor, had compiled a 54-14 record in her first collegiate season. First-year sabreist Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) competed Saturday. Out of 96 fencers, Pasternak finished 30th.
Sophomore sabreist Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) took 40th. Kelsey Nencheck (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) advanced to the round of 64 ep?e draw before being knocked out.
Northwestern returns to dual competition Feb. 22 at the Midwest Duals.
