EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern came up short against No. 8 Michigan, 35-12, Saturday at Cliff Keen Arena. Despite the loss, Jason Erwinski (Tinley, Park, Ill./Mt. Carmel) won his fourth straight match and eighth of his last ten, running his record to 18-9. NU dropped to 5-7 and 0-3 in the Big Ten.
Jon Ott (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) brought the 'Cats to within one with his 6-5 decision against the Wolverines' Shaun Newton. UM tallied two straight pins thereafter before Erwinksi defeated Mike Kuczycki, who retired with an injury at 2:17. Erwinski is 10-2 in dual play, including 3-0 in conference competition.
Brendan Curran (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) picked up the Wildcats' other tally at 184 pounds, with an 8-6 win against Willie Breyer. Curran is 15-13 in 2003.
Northwestern is back in action Feb. 7 at Illinois.
