EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern swept the 2003 series with Iowa by beating the Hawkeyes in three games on Friday night. The win was the Wildcats' second straight, as they improved to 15-10 overall, 6-7 in Big Ten play.
"Anytime you face a winless team, you have to be careful, because they're gunning for you to get that first win," said head coach Keylor Chan on facing the 5-18, 0-13 Hawkeyes. "We came in not wanting to be that first team."
NU took command of game one early, holding a .286 to -.067 hitting percentage advantage over Iowa. Junior Leah Delcourt (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) was 3-4 (.750) to lead the 'Cats, with senior Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland/Tarnobrzeg) adding six kills and a team-leading five digs. Tied at eight, Northwestern pulled ahead and quickly held a 10-point advantage at 22-12. The Wildcats took the game 30-17.
Iowa came back hard in game two, pulling even with Northwestern and keeping things close through the middle part of the game. In the second, NU held only a slight advantage over Iowa with an .162 attack percent and equaled the Hawkeyes' 10 digs. Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) served for five points late in the game, helping the 'Cats to a 30-24 victory. Lodzik was hitting at .500 in the second.
The sweep wasn't guaranteed for NU as Iowa extended early leads in the third to go up by as many as six later in the game. With the game at 21-15, freshman Lauren Greenwood (Brentwood, Tenn/Brentwood) came in to serve for the Wildcats and pulled them within two. Later tied at 27, Lodzik served and put the 'Cats in position to take game at 29-27, but Iowa forced Northwestern to earn the win off of a Hawkeye serve. Gardner took the final kill for the win.
"Coming back down six points really showed our fortitude," said Chan. "It was a great rally."
Drew Robertson (Long beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) had 43 assists in the match. Delcourt led the 'Cats with her .545 attack percent, while Lodzik was 21-37 (.432) with eight digs.
The Wildcats face No. 20 Minnesota at 7 p.m. on Saturday night. Northwestern volleyball will also welcome home the 1983 Big Ten Champions on Saturday night, honoring them before and after the match.
