EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior Jitim Young posted 23 points to lead all scorers and added 12 rebounds as the Northwestern men's basketball team cruised to an 85-67 win in its exhibition opener against Coaches vs. Cancer at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Young went 7-of-13 from the floor, including two 3-pointers, and grabbed five offensive rebounds while playing the entire game. Sophomore T.J. Parker added 14 points, six assists and four steals for NU, while classmate Mohamed Hachad had 13 points and five rebounds as the Wildcats were thoroughly entertaining on offense in the second half.
Freshman Vince Scott, who scored 10 points, was the only other NU player in double digits.
Tony Robertson led Coaches vs. Cancer with 13 points, while teammates Mike Campbell and Harold Arcenaux had 10 points apiece.
"We have had 14 practices so far and I think we did okay with the things we have worked on a little bit," said head coach Bill Carmody. "We really worked at pushing the ball up the floor and having different guys handle the ball to see what we can get off transition."
In the first half, both Northwestern and Coaches vs. Cancer appeared jittery, as each team committed four turnovers within the first six minutes.
The Wildcats, however, were able to crawl their way to an 11-point lead twice in the period; the first time off runs of six points and then four. But eventually Coaches vs. Cancer chipped away at the lead-putting together runs of four and six of their own-to trail only 36-32 at the end of the half.
However, Parker opened the second half with a 3-point shot, one of seven the Wildcats scored in the period. NU then went on an 8-0 run, followed by a 9-0 run, to open up as much as a 27-point lead.
"The exhibition is more about how you play," said Carmody. "but it's kind of like Vince Lombardi used to say; if you don't care about winning then don't keep score. It is good to win. It seemed at certain times I was just watching the ball zip around."
The Wildcats return to action next Wednesday, Nov. 12 when they face The CAPS Sports Academy All-Stars in another exhibition game at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
