EVANSTON, Ill. - Give the edge to Northwestern's women's volleyball team Friday night.

Coming off weekend losses to Purdue and Indiana, NU (18-13, 9-10 Big Ten) improved its chances at making the NCAA Championship by squeaking past Michigan State 30-28, 31-29, 30-28 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

"We wanted it more because we had a lot more to play for," said head coach Keylor Chan, noting the Spartans (19-10, 11-8 Big Ten) will most likely make postseason play. "Getting the win was more important to us."

As usual, NU's win was a team effort, but several Wildcats in particular stood out, including Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland/Tarnobrzeg), who racked up 18 kills (.371 attack percentage) and 14 digs.

In addition, Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) put up 44 assists and five blocks assists, while Erica Knavel (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East) was a strong defensive presence in the back court.

"Erica, Drew and Iwona represented us well tonight," said Chan. "They really set the tone for us."

Michigan State was led by Kim Schram, who compiled 18 kills, 10 digs and six total blocks. Teammate Jenny Rood added seven kills (.312 attack percentage) and five blocks assists.

The Wildcats took Game 1 without either team really holding a sizable advantage. Two players per team held a positive hitting percentage and both teams hit under .100 overall. One notable difference for NU was the 18 assists--double that of the Spartans. Lodzik led the Wildcats hitting .500.

In Game 2, Michigan State held the edge statistically, but Northwestern held on to overcome a late Spartan rally. Down by six mid-game, Michigan State capitalized on strong serves by Stephanie Knopp to bring them within two. Later tied at 25, the 'Cats again pulled ahead with Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) serving and won the game on a Lodzik ace.

The last game continued with the trend set by its predecessors, with both teams neck-and-neck through 26-26. At that point, the 'Cats were able to string two points and eventually take the match.

The Wildcats play host to their final Big Ten match of 2003 when they take on Michigan at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
