LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Northwestern made a strong statement at the University of Kentucky on Sunday afternoon but fell just short of its second win of the season, losing 67-60. The Wildcats (1-1) held early leads over UK, but a late second-half run was too much to overcome for the visiting 'Cats.
"My kids played hard all the way through the last possession," said head coach June Olkowski. "We fought back in the second half but couldn't make the shots we're used to making, and that also affected our defense."
Northwestern went on runs of six and four in the first half, holding as much as a 13-point lead on Kentucky. The UK Wildcats answered with a closing 9-0 run late to lead NU 30-29 at the half.
Kentucky opened the second with an 8-0 run for the 11-point advantage, but Northwestern immediately answered with an 11-0 run of their own to tie it at 43 with 8:11 remaining in the game.
UK opened their lead once again, but junior Samantha McComb hit a three with 23 seconds left to cut the lead to 64-60. But Kentucky never relinquished that lead, winning 67-60.
"Kentucky made plays when they needed to and that's why they won," said Olkowski.
Sophomore Ifeoma Okonkwo had 16 points and 7 rebounds for the 'Cats, followed by McComb's 14 points.
"I think Ifeoma's just going to get better and better game by game," said Olkowski. "She'll continue to gain confidence as we play more games."
Northwestern is back on the road this Wednesday at Dayton.
