DAYTON, Ohio - Head coach June Olkowski was thankful that the bus ride home from Dayton, Ohio was filled with the chatter of a team fresh off of a 49-47 victory. After a game that never established much flow on the court, the end result was as satisfying as any win could be and for that, Wildcat women's basketball was thankful.

"It is such a great feeling to get a win on the road," said Olkowski. "And to hear talking and laughing on the way home is fantastic."

With five- and three-minute lapses in scoring in the game, neither team held more than a five-point lead throughout the night. NU and Dayton were tied seven times and each held the lead seven times, but the 'Cats had junior Samantha McComb who scored a career-high 22 points.

"We tried to be aggressive from the beginning -- that was the game plan all along," said McComb. "We wanted to attack the basket, get to the free throw line and not rely on the three. That was the difference for us tonight."

Foul shots were indeed the difference as Northwestern was at the line 17 times compared to Dayton's six. NU hit 13 of those shots for 75%. McComb shot 8-of-9 from the foul line, including two with under 30 seconds remaining to put the Wildcats up 47-44.

"We played good enough to win," said Olkowski. "They beat us last year and it is tough to come into someone else's place, especially with the senior leadership they have. But the end result speaks a lot of my kids."

The 'Cats held a 23-22 lead at the half and relinquished that lead only twice early in the second to hold on for the win. Overall, McComb led NU with her 22 points and added six rebounds. Senior co-captain Michelle Zylstra had seven rebounds to lead her teammates in that category. Sophomore Ifeoma Okonkwo added 12 points.

Amber Robinson led the Flyers with 16 points while Angela Cape added 10 rebounds.

Next up for the Wildcats is city rival DePaul on Monday at 7 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan.

"In the last three games we haven't had the opportunity to really focus on ourselves," said Olkowski. "So it will be nice to take a day to step back and make corrections before using two days to prepare for DePaul."
