WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Northwestern could not stay on the winning track on Friday, dropping a heartbreaker to Purdue in five games. The Wildcats, who sit one game below .500 in the Big Ten going into the final three matches of the regular season, hope to extend their season with an NCAA playoff berth.

Purdue was the hungrier team in game one, answering every Wildcat point until the Boilermakers went on a four-point run for the 17-13 lead. Purdue later put together a six point run for the 27-17 advantage, going on to win 30-19. NU managed only a .086 hitting percentage compared to the Boilermakers' .471. Purdue also held a 4-1 advantage in blocks. In the game, Jill Buschur (New Bremen, Ohio/New Bremen) and Leah Delcourt (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) led the 'Cats with a .667 and .500 percentage, respectively.

The Wildcats turned things around in game two, coming back from three-point deficits to tie it late at 23. NU went ahead at 24-23 and never looked back, winning 30-25. Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland/Tarnobrzeg) killed seven of 10 and Buschur was three of four to lead Northwestern. The 'Cats improved their hitting percentage to .314 in game two and recorded 12 digs--five more than the Boilermakers.

The remainder of the match mirrored the first two games, with the teams exchanging wins to force a decisive game five. NU struggled in the third, hitting at .082 to drop the game 30-27, only to come back in the fourth by holding Purdue to a .024 attack percent and winning 30-22.

Northwestern dominated the final game early on, up 8-3 early, but Purdue did not go away and pushed their way back into contention. Tied at 13, the teams took turns with the lead through the 16th point, but Purdue took the final lead at 17-16 and the win at 18.

Delcourt ended the match with a team-leading .429 hitting percentage (7-14). Buschur was 13-35 (.229). Setter Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) had 64 assists in the match.

The 'Cats (17-12/8-9 Big Ten) play at Indiana Saturday night in their final league road match of the season. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CST.
