EVANSTON, Ill. - At the beginning of the season, every team in the country is all even. At the end of the season, it is rare to find any team still completely even. However, the Northwestern soccer team managed to finish the regular season as even as one possibly could.
With its 0-0 tie, NU finishes the regular season with a 6-6-6 record. The six ties is most in school history.
While the record might suggest that really nothing changed from the time Northwestern was 0-0-0 would be grossly innacurate.
The .500 winning percentage is the highest of any NU team since 1988. The Wildcats' three ties in conference play earned more points in the standings than in any other season under head coach Tim Lenahan.
The 'Cats still have an opportunity to finish the season above the even point with the Big Ten Tournament around the corner. They almost found a way to do it today.
With less than four minutes remaining in the first overtime, Kevin Earnest ripped a shot from 15 yards out on the right side that Badger goalkeeper Eric Hansen just barely tipped with his hand. The ball caromed past the outside of the left post leaving the 'Cats scoreless.
A tenacious defensive effort ensured the Badgers would remain scoreless as well. In only the second match of his career, freshman Justin Pines stopped seven UW shots to record his fist collegiate shutout.
NU will be in action next when the travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Big Ten Tournament. The matchups are expected to be announced early this week.
