EVANSTON, Ill. - Jitim Young scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Northwestern over the CAPS Basketball Academy All-Stars 80-66 in an exhibition game Wednesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Young led all scorers, finishing 9-of-15 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line. Vince Scott added 17 points on a 7-of-8 shooting performance from the field as well.

CAPS -- which featured recent Wildcat graduates Tavaras Hardy and Jason Burke -- came out of the blocks strong and opened up a 14-5 lead less than five minutes into the contest and carried a 37-34 edge into halftime.

The 'Cats opened up the second half with a 12-5 run, capitalizing on three CAPS turnovers in its first four possessions. NU opened up a nine-point lead with 9:33 to play when Mohamed Hachad stole a CAPS inbounds pass and fed Young for an easy layup.

Despite forcing 23 CAPS turnovers, head coach Bill Carmody was displeased with his team's overall performance and warned that the Wildcats need to make improvements before the regular season opener against Colorado.

"Our half-court offense needs a lot of work before we face Colorado," Carmody said. "They are a very good team and a very big team-we have a lot to work on before we face that team."

Carmody was, however, encouraged by Scott's performance.

"He hit some shots. I thought he played pretty well and did a nice job against CAPS' man-to-man defense," he said.

Hachad and Vedran Vukusic both turned in double-figure scoring performances for the 'Cats. Vukusic finished with 14 points, while Hachad tallied 11.

NU controlled the play inside and found great success pushing the ball up the floor, outscoring CAPS 46-24 in the paint and 22-2 on fast break points.
