DURHAM, N.C. - It did not take Northwestern long to start another unbeaten streak. Two days after the Wildcats' five-game unbeaten streak was snapped by Penn State, NU started a new one right up with a 2-1 win over Duke Sunday.
The 'Cats were playing with heavy hearts. Head coach Tim Lenahan was not at the match due to the passing of his mother. Assistant coach Erik Ronning took the reins and the team dedicated the match to Lenahan's mother.
Northwestern got on the scoreboard at 19:41 when freshman Will Nicholas scored his second goal in as many games, taking a corner pass from classmate Gerardo Alvarez and heading the ball into the back of the net, to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
A little more than ten minutes later, NU went up 2-0 when Daniel Chille fired a shot from five yards out and scored an unassisted goal.
Duke, however, tightened up in the second half, holding the Wildcats without a shot in the final 45 minutes of play.
The Blue Devils' Blake Camp put his team back within striking range when he scored a goal off a free kick from 30 yards out to make it a 2-1 contest at 65:38.
That, however, was as close as Duke would come as the NU attack controlled the final 25 minutes of the match to ensure the 2-1 win.
With the win, NU goes back above the .500 mark for the season, 4-3-4 overall and 0-1-1 in the Big Ten. The 'Cats will face one more nonconference opponent before taking on perennial powerhouse Indiana.
Loyola makes the trip up from Chicago Wednesday, Oct. 8 to do battle with the 'Cats at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
