EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern dominated Saint Louis 7-0 Friday at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex to improve its overall record to 8-8 with one game remaining in the regular season.
The match was over almost as soon as it started. Megan Small scored the first of two goals only 2:08 into the match to give the 'Cats a 1-0. Things did not get much better for the out-matched Billikens from there.
Christine Nannicelli took a pass from Diane Provencher and beat SLU goalkeeper Julie Moekel at 16:42 to put the Wildcats ahead 2-0.
Small added her second goal of the match less than 11 minutes later, scoring an unassisted goal at 27:18 to give NU a 3-0 lead.
Nannicelli capped the first-half scoring for the 'Cats when she beat Moekel on a penalty stroke with the game-clock reading 00:00.
Senior Katie Walshauser got into the scoring column when she tallied a goal at 44:21 to extend the Wildcat lead to 5-0.
Four minutes later, Provencher took a Suzi Sutton pass and beat Moekel for the Wildcats' sixth goal of the match. Moekel was replaced by backup goalie Meredith Boyle after Provencher's goal, however, Boyle did not enjoy much more success.
Sutton finished the scoring at 66:47 when she lifted a shot past Boyle off a penalty corner. Nannicelli, who stopped the entry pass, was credited with an assist.
NU's defense suffocated the Billiken attack and did not allow a single shot in the first half. Kelly Augustine, who started the match in goal for the 'Cats, was not forced to make a save. Sherri-Anne Nyberg took over at halftime and was not challenged much herself, making one save en route to the combined shutout.
Northwestern's seven goals were the most the 'Cats have posted in a match since 2000 when they hammered Indiana 7-0. It was also only the third time the Wildcats have scored seven or more goals in a match in their nine years under head coach Marisa Didio.
The Wildcats will honor Didio as well as seniors Diane Provencher, Suzi Sutton and Katie Walshauser Sunday when NU squares off with Syracuse in what will be the last time the foursome will ever step on the field at NU. Didio will retire at the conclusion of the season. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
