EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's ninth-ranked field hockey team battled through the rainy, windy and cold weather Friday as well as a strong Northwestern offense to defeat the Wildcats, 3-0. The 'Cats, who have lost three-straight Big Ten matches, drop to 4-6-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play.

The Spartans managed four shots on goal in the first half to the Wildcats six. However, it was the Spartans who made the most of their shots. Junior Annebet Beerman got MSU on the board with her seventh goal of the season off a penalty corner. Junior Veerle Goudswaard and freshman Jennifer Beeuwkes added helpers on the goal.

With 15:25 remaining, Goudswaard connected on a pass from sophomore Jessica Miller for her eighth goal on the year, which would complete the first-half scoring.

Northwestern continued to pepper Michigan State's defense in the second half. Amassing four penalty corners (six for the game), the Wildcats managed eight shots on net, but sophomore goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy was solid in goal, stopping everything that crossed her path. She accumulated 14 saves for the game in State's third shutout of the year.

Miller sealed the victory with 38 seconds left, scoring her third goal of the year on a pass from Goudswaard.

Sherri-Anne Nyberg started for the 'Cats in goal and stopped two shots, but only played the first 20 minutes of the contest. Kelly Augustine, who came in for Nyberg, made one save.

Northwestern is back in action in East Lansing, Mich. on Sunday when it takes on Stanford in a nonconference battle. The match is set for 1 p.m.
