EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern fell to Indiana 3-0 Sunday at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex, snapping a two-game winning streak. Indiana's legendary head coach Jerry Yeagley, who will retire at the end of the season, was honored before the contest in front a capacity crowd 615.
The Hoosiers made sure his visit to the NU campus was a memorable one.
Junior forward Ned Grabavoy got Indiana on the board at 15:17 when he rebounded a Brian Plotkin shot and fired it into the back of the net, giving the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
Grabavoy struck again at 34:26 when he took a pass from Kevin Robson and found himself all alone. He beat NU goalkeeper Brian Heckenbach to extend the IU lead to 2-0.
NU's defense tightened in the second half, holding the Hoosiers to only three shots. However, Robson put one of the three shots past Heckenback from close to 25 yards out, to tally Indiana's final goal.
Despite being outscored 3-0, the Wildcats had a number of opportunities but were unable to beat IU goalie Jay Nolly in the match. Nolly made two saves in the match, while Heckenbach stopped five Hoosier shots.
The Wildcats fall to 5-4-4 overall and more significantly 0-2-1 in Big Ten play. Indiana, which struggled in the early part of the season, improved their overall record to 5-3-4 and 2-0-1 in conference play.
NU is back in action on Friday when they take on league opponent Michigan in Ann Arbor. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
